Secrets to Business Success Boot Camp IV, is the fourth in the series of the capacity-building programs organized by the Bank of Industry with support from State governments as hosts, and facilitated by Rimsom Associates. Boot Camp IV started on the 9th of November in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and moved on to Lagos on the 12th and 13th where a Special Boot Camp for Women Entrepreneurs was held with support from the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. Finally, the Boot Camp ended in Benin on the 16th and 17th of November 2009, bringing the total number of states visited from inception of the boot camp series to fourteen (14).
The lead resource person for this Boot Camp series was Dr. Sharon T. Freeman, the president of Lark Horton Global Consulting, a Washington D.C. based consulting firm that focuses on developing strategies to promote the growth and export development potential of small minority and women-owned firms in different regions of the world.
In addition to Dr Freeman, Mrs. Eurica Huggin Axum, who is the Director for the International Visitor Leadership program in the Professional and Global Exchange Division (PGE) at the Institute of International Education (IIE); Mr. Lafayette Barnes, the Director of the Office of Partnerships and Grant Services (OPGS) in the Executive office of Mayor Adrian Fent, Mayor of the Government of the District of Columbia; Judson Welsh, a financial expert at the West Africa Trade Hub and founder and chairman of African Investment Services Ltd.; and Mr. Afolabi Imoukhuede, a consultant of Rimsom Associates, were on ground to help participants understand fundamentals and strategies to conceive, plan and grow businesses successfully.
Secrets to Business Success IV centered on the following topics that can enhance entrepreneurial education and economic development despite the current financial crisis. Topics covered include:
- Conceiving a business
- Gauging and growing support for your business
- Developing a business plan
- Becoming export-ready
- Avoiding common mistakes of trade.
The facilitators also enlightened over one thousand participants in the three states visited (Edo, Lagos and Oyo State) on success tips like Business Collaborations and opportunities for grants within and outside Africa. Our partner, Bank of Industry (BOI) was also available to discuss with participants about available BOI loan facilities and programs to help boost their businesses. BOI also had a presentation on the AGOA Resource Centre and how it can be of immense benefit to them. |
